The Custom House in Exeter is featuring a programme of activities and events this Spring and Summer 2022 focusing on the climate crisis and ecological emergency.
Earlier this month, I went along to a lively conversation between three creative writers and three scientists, all based in Devon and all actively working to address the climate crisis in different ways through their work. I learnt about the reintroduction of the keystone species beavers and how they will be helping to prevent flooding in Budleigh Salterton.
Ellen Wiles is currently writer-in-residence at Custom House, working with the theme of science. She has created a literary sound walk for looking at the challenges faced by the river Exe, its ecology and reaction to climate change.

I’m also participating on the ‘Trance of Nature’ poetry course led by prize-winning poet Pascale Petit during May and June.
Inspired by wildlife and nature poems, I am exploring how to write about the ecological emergency in creative ways.
